USED VOLVO’S DRIVE TP NIVEN’S GENERAL HAULAGE FLEET

Dumfries and Galloway-based, TP Niven is one of Scotland’s longest established haulage contractors. Founded 92 years ago, the company is still family-owned and operated, using depots in Dalbeattie, Lockerbie and Somerset to complement its headquarters in the village of Palnackie.

TP Niven has been a Volvo trucks customer for decades, predominately with new vehicle purchases. A new FH500 tractor unit, which arrived in 2014, was followed by five Used Volvo FH prime movers in September 2015, in 6x2 pusher axle format. The latter group were supplied by Alan McGregor, Sales Executive at Volvo Truck and Bus Centre North & Scotland’s Used Truck Centre in Glasgow West. Since the sale, Alan McGregor has now moved to the position of Dealerpoint Manger at Volvo Truck and Bus Centre North & Scotland’s Ayr facility.

TP Niven’s Used Volvo FHs all feature Globetrotter cabs, Volvo’s D13K engines rated at 500hp and I-Shift automated manual transmission systems.

“We run the Used Volvo FHs in our general haulage work on a full time basis. They are coupled to standard curtainside trailers, many of which also carry Moffett Mounty forklift trucks. The drivers love the FH Globetrotter cabs, which are perfect for the required four nights out every week,” notes Duncan McFegan, Fleet Engineer at TP Niven. “All of our Used Volvo FHs were bought as low mileage tractor units. Our standard fleet retention period is four years, for new or used vehicles, and in that time the Volvos will each average an annual mileage of around 180,000 kilometres. We always buy vehicles with a minimum amount of warranty and carry out all maintenance and repair works in-house,” Duncan reports.

Duncan adds, “There have been a few minor electrical niggles with the vehicles, but I’m happy with Volvo’s response and rectification of these. The I-Shift automated gearbox is the best that’s out there. Fuel consumption figures are constant and acceptable for the challenges of general haulage work.”

The company’s nationwide general haulage operations take in all parts of the country from Cornwall to Thurso. In addition to offering third party maintenance, TP Niven’s busy Palnackie workshop is open seven days per week and staffed by a team of ten technicians, many of who have accrued a long service with the company.

“We always use genuine Volvo parts from the manufacturer’s Carlisle dealerpoint. The Volvo powertrain is robust and reliable. I would certainly consider purchasing Used Volvo Trucks again,” Duncan concludes.
